Class 4 Homework
Homework will be set regularly each week and this will be given out every Tuesday. This is mainly due to having my PPA (planning, preparation and assessment) and NQT (newly qualified teacher) time out of class at the end of the week. Spelling sentences are to be handed in on a Monday morning and the other three tasks to be handed in on the Tuesday morning.
The children have a Homework Book for completion of written tasks and a Homework Diary, which will be completed in class on a Tuesday as their homework is set. The diary may also be updated during the week, so I would like the children to have it available in their school bag or tray.
Weekly homework will include:
- Revision of Tables – Each week the children will be asked to revise their times tables ready for a test. The chosen table will be different for each child depending upon their confidence.
- Maths Games
- Literature Circles
- Spelling Sentences – Each week I will display 20 spellings for the children to choose only 10. The children must select 10 spellings which they feel are personally challenging. I believe this is an important part of personalised learning and self-evaluation, although I will also monitor their choices. The children must then write 10 sentences using their 10 spelling choices. The children will be encouraged to ensure their sentences are a reflection of their own ability. This challenge will be personal for each child.
In addition to Literature Circles work, I encourage the children to read other material at home for at least 20 minutes each evening. This should be for their personal enjoyment and interest.
I may also set the children additional homework for other subject areas and this may simply include research/investigative work.
Our Weekly Timetable
We will have a set timetable in Class 4 to ensure an even spread of all curriculum areas and I will be giving the children a copy of our timetable to be secured in their Homework Book. The copy of the timetable is to remind the children when their homework is due and to encourage them to be prepared for the lessons each day.
The Early Bird
Each morning the children will complete an ‘Early Bird’ activity when they arrive at school. This is to warm them up for the day ahead. I am keen to ensure the completion of a Reading Diary and have allocated time each week for this to be completed as and when the children finish their reading book. Other Early Bird tasks include the completion of their differentiated Maths Cards and various activities to improve thinking skills and creativity.
