We are your child's teachers in Black Class this term. Mrs Pena teaches in the mornings, and Mrs Mackay in the afternoons.
Our class name is one of the colours of the Olympic rings in honour of the Olympic celebrations this summer. Children with Mrs Pena and Mrs Mackay will be Black Class.
Topic overview for 2012

In Reception Year and Year One the children learn at their own level, and objectives are carefully planned to ensure progression within the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. In Reception, the curriculum followed is the Early Years Foundation Stage, though children are able to achieve Year One objectives as they become ready. The Reception Year allows children to gain the skills and independence needed to learn at Key Stage One and beyond.
In Year One, the National Curriculum is used to plan broad and balanced learning experiences, both through directed teaching and independent learning, enabling children to work towards both Year One and Year Two objectives where appropriate. Planning is carefully organised with Mrs Wilson who teaches the Green Class, to ensure that curriculum coverage is the same for all Year One children at Kirby Hill School.
Our overarching theme for the term is ‘Ssh, listen carefully’. Our topics are shown on our class newsletter, which can be accessed on the school website.
Books
Learning Logs, Talk Homework and Special Tasks in Black Class
Year One will be using Learning Logs to extend their learning at home, and all children will be involved in weekly Talk Homework. As Reception children become ready, they may be given a Special Tasks book to use at home. If you would like more information on any of these, please ask us.
Reading books
Reading is one of the many important skills your child will need to access the curriculum throughout the school and beyond, so it is vital that opportunities to read are extended at home. Your child will have a reading book, without words at first, and we ask that you record their reading in the red reading record as often as possible. Once Reception children begin to learn to read words, they will bring home key rings of tricky words to learn to read then spell. Please help your child to read these words in any order, then to spell them, and ask if you need further information, support or ideas.
