I am delighted to welcome your child to Year 1 & 2 and I am pleased to introduce myself, Mrs Wilson as your child’s class teacher.
In honor of London hosting the Olympic Games this year we have decided to adopt the colors of the Olympic rings as class names for 2012.
Children with Mrs Wilson will be Green Class.
Topic Overview for 2012

Our whole school theme over the Summer term will be ‘Sssh Listen Carefully. We will also be celebrating the Queens Jubilee with a range of learning activities at the end of this half term. Below is an overview of some of the things we will be looking at, experiencing or researching. We will be taking a creative approach to the curriculum.

Within our Science topic next term we will be focusing on Sound and Hearing. For one of our investigations, children will have the opportunity to explore ‘Earmuffs’. If you do have any earmuffs which we would be able to use within our Science lessons within the first week back, we would be extremely grateful if your child could bring them into school.
What we will be learning this term...
Science
Our Science topic will be ‘Sound and Hearing and ‘Light and Dark’. Our main investigations will be:
- How can we make the best earmuffs?
- Which is the best colour to show up at night?
We will be learning to:
Describe and recognise sounds
- Explore sounds using materials
- Experiment with sounds
- Think about safety and sounds
- Recognise sources of light
- Describe reflection
- Compare light sources
History & Geography
Within History and Geography or theme are the ‘ Second World War’ and ‘Seaside and Holidays’. Miss Bartle will continue teach these lessons. Within History and Geography we will be answering these questions:
- What was it like for children in the Second World War?
- What where Seaside holidays like in the past compared to Seaside holidays now?
Art & Design and Design Technology
This term in Art and Design, we will be looking at ‘Sculpture’, focusing on using natural resources. Children will be developing their skills of exploration and will use these skills to develop and extend their own Artistic ideas.
Within Design Technology we will be creating playground equipment. This term of work will be based around investigative, disassembly and evaluative activities. The aim is to Design and make models of equipment for a playground.
Music
During music we will be practising the following skills:
- Responding to “moods” in music
- Creating sounds and putting them together to represent different moods and emotions
- Recognising how musical elements affect the mood of the music.
- Sing songs in tune with expressions
- Performing a part in a group building up layers of sound (texture).
ICT
We use Information and Communication Technology in almost everything we do. This will be incorporated in a cross curricular way into all subjects. The focus for this term will be on understanding instructions and writing stories
French
French lessons will consist of practical games and children will begin to learn French phrases and songs. We will focus on birds (Alouette) and Seasides (A la plage).
RE
In Religious Education lessons we will be learning about:
- Light and how Christians use light
- Belonging – belonging to a family, a group and how children can belong in religion.
Literacy and Numeracy are not shown above, but will be of great importance in everything we do. During the Summer Term, the units covered in Literacy will be; Information texts, Stories about Fantasy worlds, Explanations, Poetry and Instructions.
Within Numeracy, I will continue to send home our Numeracy Spiders to allow you to see the area of focus on a 2/3 week basis.
Trips:
In the first half of the Summer term we are hoping to go on a trip to Hesketh Farm, near Bolton Abbey, Skipton. As well as visiting the farm we will also have the opportunity to meet our Link school. We have formed pen-friends with a school in Lancashire whom we regularly write to. I will be sending out further information nearer the time.
P.E in Green Class
Green Classes PE lessons will consist of Games/Athletics and Dance/Gymnastics. Please make sure children have correct PE kits in school each week this will take place on a Monday and a Friday. Girls will also need hair bobbles to tie long hair back. PE kits need to be appropriate for indoor and outdoor PE. Ideally PE kits should stay in school all week as PE days could change.
